The inland and marine coastal fisheries resources of the Eastern Africa, Southern Africa and Indian Ocean region represent a natural wealth of about € 50 billion. ECOFISH strives to ensure the sustainable management of these assets by putting in place policies to handle them effectively, by protecting them and by promoting good fishing practices.

RESULT 1: Enhanced regional policies and institutional frameworks to secure more sustainable fisheries management and contribute to marine biodiversity and climate resilience.

Support SSF-Biodiversity Conservation Demonstration Activities
SSF – Climate Adaptation Outlook Network
Imporved Data & Information Management in the BE Context
Integrated Coastal Fisheries Resources and conservation management
Updated Fishery Policies and Management Plans
Actualized SSF Registration & Licensing Frameworks
Updated Fishery Policies and Management Plans
Enhanced Regional Cooperation in inland and Marine Fisheries

RESULT 2: Strengthened capacity to prevent, deter and eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in the EA-SA-IO region

8 STRATEGIC ACTIONS

Support inter-regional, inter-agency and inter-governmental cooperation in EA-SA-IO
Support exchange of experiences & development of coordinated approaches to improve MCS of small scale marine fisheries
Organise joint regional sea & air patrols with Authorities in continuation of the Joint Regional Patrol Programme of IOC-PRSP
Facilitate the interoperability of systems & exchange of data at regional levels
Support capacity building for regionally harmonised enforcement, compliance & prosecution procedures
Provide capacity building and technical assistance on catch Certification & traceability scheme
Encourage synergies with other regional initiatives
Establishment of risk assessment frameworks with the support of EFCA

RESULT 3: Concrete fisheries management and governance initiatives in small-scale inland and marine fisheries are supported with the possibilities of replication at the regional level.
