During the 65th regional fisheries surveillance mission, conducted from 28 May to 08 June 2025, the Sri Lankan fishing vessel Ruth Baba 6 was intercepted while engaging in illegal fishing off the coast of Besalampy (Melaky region). Eight Sri Lankan crew members were arrested for fishing without a licence and for the illegal capture of protected species, including sharks.
A certificate of recognition was awarded to all members of the crew involved in the operation, highlighting their professionalism and commitment to the fight against IUU (Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated) fishing. This 65th patrol was carried out as part of the Regional Fisheries Surveillance Plan (PRSP), implemented by the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) through the ECOFISH Programme, with financial support from the European Union.
